Safe Haven Cancer Support Centre is a not-for-profit organization which was incorporated under Act 179 of the Companies Act of 1963, in December 2013. It has three directors (Ms. Janet Brakohiapa the Founder, Mrs. Eunice Nyarko and Dr. Edmund Brakohiapa a Co-Founder), a Secretary, a Treasurer and Patrons. Since 2013 when the organization was founded, it has engaged in a number of activities including:

 

  • Education and Information sessions to churches, individuals and other organizations about the importance of early detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

  • Presentations from experts on various topics of relevance to Members.

 

  • It has provided public information sessions through various media sources like radio, television, internet and print.

 

  • It has held fundraising events including its annual Hats for Health event to raise funds for its activities and upkeep.

 

  • In October 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, the organization in Ghana opened a physical space at Tesano in Accra.  The Centre is a central meeting point to provide emotional support to cancer patients and their families.

 

  • Since June 2021, the organization has held bi-weekly support group meetings via Zoom where members and their families can interact with each other and obtain and provide peer support. The number increased from 5 people in 2021 to about 75 people to date.

  • It also holds periodic in-person activities for its members at the Centre.

 

  • The Centre employs a nurse on a part-time basis.  One of her duties is to do outreach to various health facilities including the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to advertise the Centre's existence and services.

 

  • The Organization provides free mastectomy brassieres and on occasion prostheses (subject to availability) to its Members.

 

  • On occasion and under very limited circumstances, contributes to some of its Members' treatments if possible and subject to the availability of funds.

 

  • Provides appropriate referrals and access to breast cancer resources if possible.

 

  • The organization has collaborated with other cancer organizations to spread awareness about the importance of the message of early detection, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.  Recently, it was invited by a UK cancer organization to participate in a documentary to showcase the importance of having cancer support organizations and their work. To date, Safe Haven Cancer Support Centre has supported about 90 breast cancer survivors in Ghana.

OUR MISSION

To provide breast cancer awareness education and information, emotional and other supports and services to breast cancer patients, survivors and their families living in Ghana, while they are going through their journey. To join hands with breast cancer patients and survivors in Ghana to combat stigmatization and isolation amidst other challenges.

To provide support and public education about the importance of early detection, diagnosis and

treatment of breast cancer.
